Over the past two years, I have focused on transitioning into natural products throughout my home. The slow transition to natural products is allowing me to really do my research to find products that check off most or all of my boxes. However, the slowest transition for me is when I focus on sustainable beauty.
With the hot trend words currently being “natural” and “organic”, it seems that a lot of research goes into finding out if the companies that sell these products truly stand behind those words or not.
Greenwashing is a major player among bigger companies, and it is hard to know who to trust.
This is why I am partnering up with CreekBaby for today’s post! They are a company that believes in transparency and simplicity, as well as being safe and unscented.
They do market themselves as an Unscented Organic Skin Care Company, but I am going to let you know why they are so much more than that to me.
Why You Should Care About Sustainable Beauty
Let’s talk about ingredients
The first thing I want to point out is the difference between the labeled words “natural” and “organic”.
The word “natural” is not regulated by the USDA. So it is safe to assume that products labeled as “natural” can be just as harmful to your skin as regular conventional products.
The word “organic” is regulated by the USDA. However, it only requires 95% of the product’s ingredients to be actually organic. While I believe these products are safer than products labeled as “natural”, it does mean that companies could put something in the product that is not natural.
So what is the best option when seeking a truly organic, healthy, and safe beauty product?
Your best bet is to read the ingredients list. If you cannot read/pronounce an ingredient, odds are it is not natural or safe for your skin. Of course, do some research to be sure, but this is how I deem what is best for my skin or not.
Dangers of Fragrance
A trick that is often used by companies is the word “fragrance”. Since companies have their fragrances trademarked, they do not have to disclose what is included within their fragrance.
If a company uses synthetic ingredients within its fragrance, odds are you’ve experienced side effects, such as headaches, sinusitis, asthma, and many other things. For more information, check out this post by Ecomall.com.
The best thing to do when fragrance is listed as an ingredient in a product is to avoid it. However, there is another option if you want to put some effort into it.
Companies that do not use synthetic ingredients may give you a list of what makes up their fragrance. Some companies even state that their fragrance is derived from plant-based fragrances only or that they do not use synthetic ingredients within their fragrance.
Personally, I do my best to avoid fragrance at all costs because if a company truly cares about their consumers’ health, they won’t hide what ingredients are in their products with the word “fragrance”.
So now you’re asking yourself, “How do I find a truly clean, sustainable beauty product?”
To be honest, this one is easy to answer, “Make it yourself” or “Use Google to find companies”.
However, I have found that making the product yourself can be a hit or miss. I have made several products that did not work well for me, and essentially that product was wasted. Don’t get me wrong, a few worked out just fine, but I don’t like wasting my money like that.
When it comes to Google, you’re most likely only going to find companies that have been around for a while or pay for advertisement.
While there are a lot of sustainable beauty product companies available, they all seem to charge an arm and a leg due to the growing popularity of quality organic/clean products.
My suggestion for finding a truly clean, sustainable beauty product…
I suggest that you ask like-minded people. [After all, that is how I found CreekBaby.] People want to help when they know what you need.
So since you asked above how to find these products, let me tell you why I am suggesting CreekBaby for your sustainable beauty products!
- Their mission is to provide products that are “simple, safe, and unscented”.
- You can read/pronounce ALL of the ingredients on their products.
- Their products contain NO fragrance or scent of any kind.
- Their products are safe for ANYONE! [Yes, babies too!]
- They are AFFORDABLE! Which is huge in the beauty industry.
- Their products are colored with plants and spices. No artificial colorants for their products!
Let’s Talk Packaging
Packaging is just as important as ingredients when it comes to sustainable beauty products. Since these products only last for a few months, you probably toss more containers than you are aware.
I personally believe there are three options to consider:
1 // Recycled
Keeping things out of the landfill is of the utmost importance. If you don’t believe me, just Google the effect of plastic on the natural environment.
By recycling products, less goes to the landfill or may end up in the natural environment. Plus, it gives materials more than one use.
2 // Recyclable
Products that have many lives are great! It reduces the need for using new resources.
I realize plastics cannot be recreated into an exact replica, but they can create other things that are needed.
3 // Compostable
When it comes to shipping packages, compostable options work best. Why companies insist on wrapping everything in plastic that cannot be recycled is beyond me, especially when the change is so simple.
Tips to consider with packaging
There are a few tips that I have to reduce your packaging waste, and it does not start with using fewer things.
- Check your local recycling centers to see which products they can recycle. Just because something is recyclable does not mean that it can be done locally, so be sure to do your research.
- Ask for product refills instead of ordering new products. This reduces packaging resources cost to produce for the company, and it creates a connection with you and the company. Think about it like the discount that Starbucks offers when you bring your own coffee cup. They offer a discount because you are saving them resources and costs.
- Reuse containers that don’t fall under the other two tips. For example, if you have a container that cannot be recycled locally and you cannot get a refill to use it for something else.
Why do I still suggest CreekBaby products?
CreekBaby products are packaged in a few different materials:
- Metal
- Glass
- Recycled Plastic
Their shipments are packed in paper, which is done well enough to be able to reuse the paper for gift wrapping and other fun things.
We all have different standards of what is sustainable, but if you have yet to start the transition, CreekBaby products are a great starting point. They are affordable and care about their consumer and the planet.
