How Minimalism Can Improve Your Health

Hi there! My name is Samantha. I was excited when Erin reached out for me to write a guest post on her blog. It’s a topic I love talking about because it truly changed my life.

Optimal health is something I always wanted to achieve but continually fell short.

I spent years searching for the answer. Strict guidelines, complicated workout regimes, and unrealistic expectations left me feeling defeated. Anxiety and depression controlled my life. Negative thoughts overcrowded my mind. It felt like a never-ending downward spiral.

Embracing a minimalist lifestyle was the solution I so desperately searched for. I had no idea the concept of living with less could affect my health in the best possible way.

Minimalism rids your life of the unnecessary, thus creating space and time for what really matters.

Since simplifying, I’m in the best shape of my life. Not just physically; emotionally, mentally and spiritually.

Decluttering improves mental health.

I didn’t think it was possible to break free from the bondage of anxiety and depression, but I was wrong. The tools I learned from minimalism helped me take back control of my life.

It started by decluttering my possessions. I had no idea how much clutter affected my life. Every item I let go of feeling like bricks being lifted off my shoulders.

I realized that visual clutter triggered my overwhelming thoughts. If I didn’t love it or didn’t use it, out it went.

After a few weeks, I was less anxious. After a few months, my anxiety was almost non-existent.

I keep my space and mind clear by regularly editing what I have and being intentional with what I bring home. Minimalism isn’t a declutter-once-and-done kinda thing. It’s a journey that’s constantly changing.

Less stuff gives you more clarity and focus.

When I was in school, I couldn’t start my homework until my room was tidy and my desk surface was clear. I’d get too distracted by all the stuff.

It makes sense; clutter obstructs focus.

If you keep the items you love or use regularly and let go of what you no longer need, you will inevitably create a space with less chaos. You’ll be able to focus clearly instead of getting overwhelmed mountains of clutter.

Minimalism creates healthy habits.

Do you know why my resolutions never stuck? I made it too complicated and gave up soon after I started.

I finally realized I didn’t need to spend hours in a gym with a super complex routine. Instead, I find exercises I love and want to do.

Dieting? Counting calories? Weighing myself? Restricting? I threw all of that in the trash. My motto now is to keep everything simple, from ingredients to workouts.

I keep recipes basic. Choosing to fuel my body with nutritious, whole foods made a big difference. I’ve learned to create delicious meals that have few ingredients and don’t take up too much time.

I used to be the queen of excuses. I had a stockpile of reasons why I couldn’t workout or make healthy meals. Minimizing other areas in my life allowed me to find the time “I didn’t have enough of.”

Embracing a simpler life.

There have been so many benefits I’ve reaped from simplifying, but the biggest transformation has been on my health journey. I’ve found joy in creating a healthy lifestyle through minimalism.

So many people believe it’s just about living with the bare minimum, but it actually creates a life of abundance.

It’s definitely not a one timebthing, minimalism is a constant journey. This blog inspired me to stay the course withbeven great purpose. Thank you!

    1. I bet it does, Karissa! One thing I have learned is that if you take your time, you have a greater chance at sticking with the changes you make. Keep it up and you will get to where you want to be!
