Minimalism Confessions Volume 3: Budgeting

I may make a commission from the links within this post. Learn more.

The Minimalism Confessions Series is turning out to be one of my favorite posts to share. The feedback and stories that are shared with me personally are comforting and cherished.

It seems the more I open myself up to you about my personal struggles, the more you open up with me. Each time you share something with me, you reaffirm the reason the blog exists.

Because of this amazing response to this series, I have decided to expand this month’s confession. Read all the way through to get the details, and feel free to leave a comment or contact me personally with any questions or ideas.

Confessing struggles isn't easy, especially when it comes to budgeting. Luckily, I have a trick up my sleeve.

Minimalism Confessions Volume 3

When dealing with struggles, it is good to know you are not alone. Regardless if you consider yourself a minimalist or not, at some point you have struggled with this I am sure. But today we are going to discuss:

budgeting

Normally, I am great with a budget. Maybe not to the penny, but I know my boundaries. However, with the farm growing, projects needing to be completed, and working to replace things within my wardrobe; my budget has been a little out of wack.

It is to the point that I am avoiding my checkbook, because I know I have neglected my boundaries. While I feel that I should be embarrassed by this, I am not.

This happens to everyone at some point as we endure different seasons of our lives. Right now, I am in a season of growth, and my budget has suffered because of it.

Since I know I am not alone with having my budget get out of wack, I thought it would be fun to focus on getting my boundaries back in place with a budget challenge.

To make it even better, I want to extend an invitation to you to make sure our budget is in tip top shape!

Starting August 1st, I will be hosting the No Spend Challenge on Instagram. If you follow any budgeting blogs, you have probably heard of it.

If you have not, here are the rules I will personally be using. Some bloggers who have done this challenge are more strict than these rules, but I have thought long and hard about how to make this challenge work for everyone.

No Spend Challenge Rules

1 // Paying loans and utility bills are acceptable.

I would not want anyone’s electricity or water turned off, so please make sure you do pay these during the challenge.

2 // Create a weekly budget for groceries and only purchase the items that are absolutely necessary.

While a weekly budget for groceries is allowed, make sure you spend this money on things necessary for breakfast, lunch, and dinner [and healthy snacks]. Junk food, sodas, and desserts are not deemed necessary for this challenge.

3 // Gas and Fuel are acceptable.

Obviously we still have to go to work, run errands, and pay bills. We will need our vehicles, and therefore, need gas or fuel.

4 // No eating out via fast food or restaurants.

Plan ahead, pack a lunch, and save some money! This is one of my biggest problem areas with my budget, and it is due to not planning ahead of time.

I will be making my lunches on Sunday, so that I have no excuse to run and grab overpriced, unhealthy food.

5 // No “hobby” shopping.

Stay away from the stores, online shopping, or any type of browsing that will tempt you to spend money on unnecessary things. Instead, fill your time with productive activities.

Need a few suggestions? Check out this post I wrote a couple of months back!

Also, this will go the ENTIRE month of August, so prepare yourself! I want us all to succeed at this challenge!

What to expect with the No Spend Challenge

As stated above, this challenge will be hosted on my Instagram. I have collaborated with some amazing financial bloggers and YouTuber. Together we will be sharing our best budget tips and tricks!

These ladies have a serious passion for budgeting, saving money, and getting creative with saving!

I know you are going to enjoy what we have organized for you!

All you have to do to participate or follow along with us is follow me! Easy peasy, right?!

If you have any questions, please leave a comment.

I’m definitely up for this, so following you on insta..I received the email late as I’ve turned off all notifications on my phone (a good tip of yours I think!)
I removed my debit card from my phone wallet as it was too easy to go shopping online especially with it so nearby.

This is so good, I know I’m going to be one of loads of us who will benefit from the budget challenge. Thank you!!

Yay! Vivien, I am so excited you are joining in on the fun! While the live chat on Instagram was great, you did not miss a lot. I shared a little of my story (which I believe you already know most of what I shared), the rules (which are in this post), and answered questions that anyone had. I did give a little sneak peak into some of the things that will be happening, but my big reveal will be on August 1st. I will be announcing the collaborators, reiterating the rules, and some other things.

P.S. I love that you use my tips I share! It means so much to hear that you like them!

Funnily enough I decided something similar starting last payday (25th July) Only I allow myself 1 eating out a week. That way I don’t miss out socially. Good luck everyone 🙂

Deleting the Amazon and Poshmark app. Kind of want to delete Periscope as well since I can purchase LLR on there. I do have some cash on me just in case I get invited to lunch during staff week for teachers. Since I am new I don’t want to be rude. The rest of the time I will eat my salad happily. The other challenge is my five year old. He is a money eater 🙂

I am curious to see how much money I actually spend each month without realizing.

I did not even think about deleting Amazon from my phone for the month! Doing that now!! I completely understand not wanting to be rude for staff week. Definitely make this challenge work for you, Megan. I am excited to see how much you save! 🙂
