Why You Need a Collagen Supplement in Your Diet

This post may contain affiliate links. You can read my full disclosure in the sidebar.

Hi friend! I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving! I took a nice break from my regular routine, and enjoyed some much needed time off [hence no post this past Friday]. Now that I am back into the swing of things, I am excited to share with you the last Green Beauty Month post! Last week, we discussed ingredients that you soak up through external use. This week, we are focusing internally, specifically we are discussing the importance of a collagen supplement!

Caring for your body externally does many great things, as we have discussed this month. However, taking care of your body from an internal stand point provides just as many benefits. For instance, you can care for your skin and hair as before it is exposed externally. Starting with the deepest part of your hair root, you can nourish your hair for much longer. Your skin rejuvenation also gets a boost to keep your skin glowing and youthful.

While there are several supplements you can take, my current favorite is with a collagen supplement. Just as the rest of the Green Beauty Month posts have gone, there is a special giveaway at the end for you to enter! For this week, Sarah at Pretty Simple Ideas and I are partnering with Neocell to give away two of their products, but you will have to read to the bottom of this post to see which two!

Beauty is not always found by working externally, but also internally - more specifically, by using a collagen supplement. This post explains the whys, whats, and benefits.

Collagen Supplement Benefits

Collagen is something our body loses over time. When you start to see fine lines and wrinkles appear, this means the collagen in your body is breaking down, which is not what we want. In order to keep the collagen levels up in your body, you need more collagen, obviously… Taking a collagen supplement helps these levels stabilize or even increase.

Collagen not only helps your appearance become more youthful over time; it also helps you internally. Hopefully with this information, you will be inspired to add a collagen supplement to your routine!

1 // Improve Skin

This benefit is probably the first one you think about when it comes to collagen, and you are right to think that. It not only helps with adding collagen back into your skin for a more youthful appearance, but it helps with skin rejuvenation.

2 // Cellulite and Stretch Mark Reduction

Collagen aids in improving skin elasticity and detoxes your body. Both of these combined help bond your cells to reduce cellulite and stretch marks. Who would not love this benefit alone?!

2 // Hair Health

Taking care of our hair is not just a shampoo and conditioner job. You have to nourish the hair within the roots to help it stay strong and healthy. Collagen helps to strengthen the hair and help improve its growth.

3 // Stronger Nails

Collagen also improves the strength of your nails. If you have thin brittle nails, this will help tremendously! Again, this will not be an overnight change, but given time, it will improve them!

4 // Joint Health

Collagen is not only great for the skin, hair, and nails. It is also great for your joints. If you suffer from joint pain or inflammation, this is a natural supplement you should try!

5 // Improved Sleep

Because collagen is a protein rich supplement, your energy levels balance better. I add this in with my coffee and notice that I am more consistent in my productivity throughout the day. I do not suffer from a hard crash in the middle of the day, and my sleep is much better when I take it. You can take a collagen supplement at any time of the day. I just prefer the beginning so that I do not have to remember throughout the day to take it.

6 // Improved Health

Collagen overall is great for your health. It is a natural detox for your body, so many organs benefit from it, such as your heart and liver. This is probably the reason your energy levels balance better throughout the day and sleep improves. Your metabolism also improves the longer you use a collagen supplement. Which has another benefit that needs to be listed separately.

7 // Helps Leaky Gut

Leaky gut occurs when your stomach is unable to digest food. The toxins within the food leak from your stomach and intestines to other parts of your body causing all sorts of mayhem. Often times, you feel bloated and tired. While this is due to your diet, taking a collagen supplement can correct it. It prevents harmful toxins and bacteria from leaving your stomach and intestines.

The Difference Between a Collagen and Gelatin

I tested several kinds of collagens and gelatins before deciding on Neocell’s Collagen Supplements. From bone broths to gelatins to different collagens, I decided a marine collagen is my favorite. It is the easiest to add into your routine, and it is flavorless. A bone broth is something I would add into a soup, but not take on its own. I do not care for the flavor by itself.

The simplest way to explain the difference is that Collagen never gels, while gelatin does. Collagen is a great additive to beverages, smoothies, tea, and coffee. Gelatin is great with jellos, gummies, or desserts.

Both are great options, depending on how you want to ingest it. There are several brands and varieties you can try, so definitely experiment and have fun figuring out which you prefer!

SIDE NOTE: Make sure when you shop around for a collagen supplement that does not contain any additives as these may dilute the benefits of the supplement.

As I said at the beginning, Sarah and I are partnering with Neocell to bring you an amazing giveaway! The winner will get to try TWO of their products! We are giving away the Marine Collagen in capsule form and the Super Collagen powder. Both of these are great collagen supplement options!

What I love most about Neocell is their dedication of using recycled bottles for all of their products and their cause. Neocell donates 1 year worth of vitamins for every product purchased to Vitamin Angel. This organization helps children, pregnant women, and new moms who suffer with being under nourished or “hidden hungry”. So far, they have helped over 1,250,000 women and children. Who would not want to support that? [Source]

Anyways, to sign up for the giveaway, enter in your information below for me! We ask for your name and email as a way to contact the winner. This does not sign you up for any newsletters. However, that option is available with the bonus entries! Good luck!!

Nice! To be honest there is not hat much info about benefits coming from collagen and that’s really a shame as it’s extremey undervalued. Thanks a lot for writing this article, I hope many more people will gather some knowledge from it and start supplementing themselves with collagen 😛
